Battle Round 2 Results!

I’m currently holed up in a comfy cottage with my dearly beloved in an ongoing celebration of her birthday.  The down-side is that, even though I collated the judges’ votes results, there was no way for me to post them   SO, because I love you guys all so much, I drove back home just long enough to post the results.  I’ll add more later, including some judges comments and the round 3 tournament groups when I get back from my vacation.  In the meantime, though, here are your winners!

  1. Congratulations to those movin’ on

  2. Is there going to be a ‘Best Loser’ pick in this round too like the last round? It would seem a shame to see Al Diesan go out after getting more than 100 votes.

If you had a Best Loser that would give you 14 for the next round and 7 winners. If you add a best loser again that would give you 8 and then it is quarter finals, semi finals and the final.

  3. Congratulation to all the winners.
I’m out but I’m happy to be in this wonderful comunity.
All the best to you all
    Luigi

  4. Congratulations to David.
All the best for the young blood.
    And keep on zimming!

  5. Don’t understand some of the votings!
For me some of those, who are now out, are the true winners!
So don’t be sad about that.
Will be interesting to get some comments of the jury.

  6. We’re really happy we’re still on the road, anyway, congratulations to Luigi whose renditition of long Black Coat is amazing. Best luck to you, fratello della passione dylanista!

    The Highlights

  7. Congratulations from me to the winners, too.
En eh, Jacques: nou moet jij het voor Holland doen!
    RobK (Hard Rain)

  8. Put your favorite top 3 in the forum ! Luigi lost this round but this a great musician will be on stage in Berlin together with the New Fools and Pet Tommy on the 14 august 2010 ! The battle brings friendship to the musicians, worldwide ! Great to have The Highlights and Jacques still on the track ! Pitty for Hard Rain but we’ll meet in Holland once i think, Rob…

  10. Am I the only one who sees several errors, or were some disqualified for reasons other than the votes they got? Looking purely at the votes:

Blood on the Tracks vs Mika Hashimoto
    Winner: Blood On The Tracks
    No it was Mika Hashimoto 56% [ 76 ] :p

    Blind vs Lawton Gafford
    Winner: Butchers Blind
    No it was Lawton Gafford 79% [ 73 ] :p

    ROBOBOB vs Utacata
    Winner: ROBOBOB

    No it was Utacata 55% [ 46 ] :p

  11. No, but you may be the only one who hasn’t yet realized that it’s our three judges who make the decision, not the voters. Voting exists solely to encourage audience participation, and potentially sway the leanings of one or more of the judges as they consider a tough personal choice.

Last year we had non-stop problems with voting abuse, so this year we decided to go with judges “American Idol” style-ish. However, I’ll know for next year not to allow any voting at all, because it clearly complicates things in people’s minds.

  12. And, speaking as a judge, I will note that my vote was in fact swayed by the popular vote, making me go back and re-listen to several bands and changing my initial pick. At this point in the competition any of the bands could make it to the final round. But as with any competition, not everyone can.

  13. I think there’s probably no reason to omit the member voting next year. In the beginning here most people did not understand that the voting was to not have a direct bearing on the winner’s outcome. People don’t read like they should obviously. Also you’ve got a lot of people coming in from outside, registering, and visiting for one thing – to vote for their favs, which of course leads to unfamiliarity with the goings-on here and eventually to “why did they win the vote but lose the round?”

On the other hand there’s really no reason to have member voting in the first place if it won’t count for anything. Like when I asked all my friends and family to vote for me they were all happy to, and when the round was over they asked me “well, you won right?” and of course I had to tell them no – and about the judges – which they didn’t understand. One thing you could do next year is have some sort of reason to win the member vote, kind of like a “members choice” award for that winner.

Either way it doesn’t matter to me, twice out in the 1st round – I won’t be humiliating myself again LOL, but some of the member bands might be interested in some of that stuff. I just wanted to point out views from both sides of it, to maybe clarify some stuff for non-members who have no idea what’s going on (if only they’d read LOL) ;-)

  14. Firstly: My comment to uomosenzanome was unnecessarily crabby, and I apologize. Just got back from a weekend away, and now I’m totally burnt. Sorry about that.

To everyone else, all good points. Thanks for giving me fodder to consider how to best handle it next time around. I *REALLY* enjoy giving Dylan fans a place to showcase their stuff (while promoting the site at the same time), but clearly have more tweaking to do. You’ve all been great – both audience and participators.

  15. Dear music lovers, and Pete in particular,

Now I know that my band (Hard Rain) didn’t win the popular vote OR the judges’ vote (even though we came in third or fourth in total number of votes), I know where we stand and I am totally satisfied. We should take this kind of competition with a grain of salt anyway, because who is to say who or what is ‘better’?

Meanwhile, I must say that I have never been able to explain to our friends, family and fans how this competition works, exactly, so I think that whichever way you want to organize it, you should give participants a clear idea of the rules of the game.

    All the best,
    RobK

  16. Sorry if you thought it was “crabby”, I was honestly confused and thought round 1 was for the judges, round 2 was for the fans to vote and then round 3 for judges again or whatever you are doing. If you were going to ignore the votes from the fans anyway then you probably are right and shouldn´t give them a vote next year, because they might think it counts for something.

  17. And sorry, Pete, I hope you didn’t take it the wrong way, I honestly thought Round 2 was the popular vote round, and the rest was judge based. We all appreciate all your work organizing this and all your hard work maintaining dylanradio . . .we are all fans of the work you´ve done. Everyone of the participants are of course winners, we all have our favorite songs, and good luck to everyone left in the competition :) .

  18. RobK -> thanks for your comment, there were songs that won the popular vote that I didn’t vote for, but I thought that they would still be continuing on to round 3 for a judge vote or whatever came next in the competition. My original comment was out of genuine concern that perhaps there was perhaps a javascript tally error or something, which is why I asked if maybe there was fraud in ballot stuffing like I think there was last year that had to be corrected by Pete. But RobK, I think you are right that it would be a good recommendation if competitors have clear layout of the process, I honestly don´t think I was the only one confused by how it worked this year. Yes I knew that it was judge-based, but I didn´t know it was for every round. I really thought the 2nd round was determined by popular vote, which is why I carefully listened to each selection at least 5 – 10 times before casting a vote.

  19. Just to be clear, I was saying that *I* was being “crabby” not you. Nuttin’ but love for you all. You’re all absolutely correct – the process was not well documented. Thanks to all for your patience, passion and participation! Y’all rock!

  20. Perhaps (for next year) you could have 2 (or 4) judges, and use the popular vote as a tie-breaker / 5th judge. This would provide incentive for voting, and any voting fraud would have minimal impact since songs would still need to garner at least a tie from the judges.
Also, the “wild card” entrant used to maintain an even-numbered field could be the highest vote-getter among the non-winners, instead of a random choice.
    Just my 2-cents.

  21. I would like to thank Pete for the competition, my oppinion is that it works great this way, and all the rules were clearly readable right from the start. Nice work, Pete! After all, it can’t be that way that he or she who has most relatives & friends online & registered wins the competition…

  22. I think that the voting system is fine and I like the idea that the judges go back and revisit something if they have voted a different way from the majority of voters.

What would be useful to know in the beginning is the system for all the way through the competition and not just for the next round.

I don’t know hwo it will be in the next round and how that will work. I’m presuming that there will be a best loser in this round and a best loser in the next followed by quarter finals, a semi and a final – but it is only an educated guess.

  23. Wow – those are some extremely disappointing and confusing results — almost across the board. I, for one, did not understand AT ALL that user votes had no impact whatsoever, and that it was all judges.

More fool me, I suppose. But I still come away with some really negative feelings about the whole thing. The effort we made to enlist fan votes turns out to be all for nothing — in two different ways!

Oh well. Good luck with the rest of the competition.

  24. It’s right there in the section “How does the Battle work?” on the page you went to in order to sign up. http://www.dylanradio.com/battle Specifically, it reads:

    - All entries will be placed in a tournament-style competition
    - In contrast to last year’s competition, while users will still get to vote for thier favourites, the final results will be determined by our hand-picked panel of judges.
    - Our three judges ARE human beings, however, so you should promote yourself and get as many votes as possible as it may sway some opinions!
    - At the end of the competition, the glorious victors will be unveiled, but frankly, all the competitors win promotion and exposure to the Dylan fan community

But all of that misses the point that every single artist who entered a song got great, targeted promotion to the Dylan fan community. Yeah, sure, the winner gets some extra promotion, but everyone still gets to shine, make new fans & friends, and get heard. It’s all good!

  25. Hello, congratulations to all concerned. At the risk of being accused of sour grapes I would like to point out AGAIN as I did earlier that I have never as Michael Crimmins or as Dylanesque entered any music for this competition nor have I volunteered any to be played on Dylanradio. Competition within music and talent shows etc are not in the spirit of Bob Dylan or his music. Isn’t it great that Dylan’s music and Dylan himself continue. Healthy competition is for athletes and not so healthy competition is for politicians. Maybe the person who submitted tracks that I recorded might like to disagree? Thanks Michael

  26. I emailed you on this, Michael, but my email was returned because the address doesn’t exist. Your drummer submitted the Dylanesque entry, and your publicist submitted your solo entry. I think there’s a clear communication problem at your end, but I will attempt to email you again.

  27. Okay, I can confirm that your email address doesn’t actually work, so there’s DEFINITELY a communication problem at your end.
