 subterrannean homesick blues = '60s rap??? |

I have this admittedly half-baked idea that Subterranean Homesick Blues could be viewed (heard) as a precursor of today's rap music. I'm not well-versed in hip hop/rap, but the rhythm of the song is such that it could easily be done as rap. Am I out in left field or does anyone see what I mean?

Even if the cadence is standart blues, I often thought the same about this song. The way the rhymes work i.e. in that verse:
Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail.
...are very 'rappy', indeed.
Another song reminds me on rap, too: It's Alright, Ma
The staccato or hard sung verses in change with a nice and more or less soft little melodie...that's what rappers often do, too.

Just for the record (and because I like Dylan's funny answer).
One of the highlights in the interview comes when Flannigan asks Dylan if he’s heard the festive hip-hop album Christmas on Death Row, and if he listens to rap in general. “I don’t listen to rap radio stations and I don’t play rap songs on the jukebox, and I don’t go to rap shows — So no I guess I don’t listen to rap music all that much,” Dylan admitted, though he did voice his respect for all the rappers out there, “I love rhyming for rhyming sake. I think that’s an incredible art form.”
