Nashville Cats: The Making of Blonde on Blonde

NashvilleCats

Tune in today at 3pm Atlantic for Nashville Cats: The Making of Blonde on Blonde! (2pm Eastern, 1pm Central, 11am Pacific, 7pm London, 6am Sydney)
Here’s the abstract:

Bill Nighy presents the definitive story of what really went down on tape, and in the studio, during the recording of Bob Dylan’s classic album Blonde On Blonde.

In February 1966, Bob rolled in to Nashville to work on his seventh studio album. Following only partially successful sessions in New York, the decision had been taken to relocate to the Colombia label’s Music Row studios. Nashville Cats looks at the music that resulted from the unlikely alliance between seasoned country music veterans, accustomed to fixed time studio sessions, and the more erratic modus operandi favoured by the wiry hipster poet.

Generally regarded as the high watermark of Dylan’s most creatively intense period, Blonde On Blonde was recalled by the songwriter himself as being “the closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind…it’s that thin wild mercury sound”. Bill Nighy narrates a tale of in-studio composition, musicians by turns bemused, exasperated and inspired, and an artist operating at the very zenith of his talent.

Nashville Cats features newly sourced interviews with the key participants on these historic studio recording dates including musicians Al Kooper, Charlie McCoy, Hargus “Pig” Robbins, Wayne Moss, Henry Strzelecki and Joe South. The documentary also features the perspective of Producer Bob Johnston, the man responsible for convincing Dylan to record in Nashville, and reveals the real story behind the supposed symbolism of its famous cover shot care of Jerry Schatzberg, the man behind the lens.

You Are AMAZING!

If you guys keep up the amazing support, we should be all caught up on the bills by the end of the month!  I was expecting to run in the red for at least other couple of months, but if you keep up your amazing response to this need, I’ll be able to start saving up for the mixer and other equipment any day now!

To show my appreciation, for a limited time, I’ve extended the little “thank-you” gift normally reserved for monthly Patreon supporters to PayPal supporters who make a donation of $20 or more.  It’s just my way of saying thanks for helping us get over this hump and well on our way to another 10 years!  Here are the donation links again:

I just can’t say thanks enough to you folks.  You are AMAZING.  I don’t know what I did to deserve supporters like you, but I plan to keep on doing this for as long as you let me!

Thank You!

A number of you have answered the call to our need to get caught up with the bills, so THANK YOU! We’re well on the way!  You’ve not only helped me, you’ve provided for every other listener as well.  We still have a way to go, however, so if you can, please support us monthly via Patreon, or make a one-time donation via Paypal.

You also probably know that the vast majority of DylanRadio is automated – I just primarily maintain/update all the integrated components.  On Saturday, however, I did a little testing to try to facilitate some live, on-air DJ’ing and that seemed to go relatively well, so I look forward to doing some more of that.  I’d love to raise enough funds to get the proper equipment to run live shows on Saturdays or Sundays, including live Skype calls from YOU, so keep that in mind.  Raising enough money to pay the bills is first & foremost, but I’d also like us to grow together as we celebrate 10 years online.

On that note if you’re outrageously wealthy and feeling particularly generous (or work for/own an audio electronics business) there’s a few big-ticket items on my Amazon wishlist: Namely a high-end PC laptop (that will let me not only handle the live-audio processing, it will let me re-purpose my current laptop for things like Skype calls), a small, quality USB Mackie mixer and a decent dynamic cardioid condenser mic.  The laptop is the goal, but it’s the mixer & mic that are most important in the immediate future. As you can see, this stuff is expensive (especially in Canadian dollars!) and will take a while to save up for.

DylanRadio Needs Your Help!

I hope everyone enjoyed the March audiobook series!  Hopefully we’ll be able to do that again, but in order to do things like that, DylanRadio needs your help.  Rest assured, nobody hates asking for help more than me, but we’re rapidly approaching a financial barrier to keeping the site running, and I think that’s due to a couple of things, not the least of which is the uncertainty of today’s economy.  I hate to bother folks with this stuff, but here it is:

We need your regular, monthly support to keep this site online.  Patreon support has been dwindling, not in pledges, but in honoring those pledges.  I don’t blame ANYONE for that because, let’s face it, stuff happens.  You can’t always afford to donate every month, which would be fine if we had hundreds of patrons, but we don’t.  We only have 21.  The more patrons we have, the easier it is to meet our goals.  I know I should have brought this up sooner, but, as it stands, I’m behind on the bills because I’ve been financially unable to make up the shortfall, never mind our hopes for expanding what we do here.  So that’s first and foremost… we need your monthly Patreon supportI’m trying to sort things out with PayPal to allow one-time donations via them again, but for now, Patreon is what we’re stuck with.  So if you have a few bucks that YOU WON’T MISS (can’t stress that enough – don’t pledge the milk-money) please click this link and pledge your monthly support via Patron.  Remember: Patreon supporters get access something extra that, I assure you, will make you very happy.  It’s not a reward or subscription, it’s just a little “thank-you” gift for helping out.

Secondly, I hate website ads as much as anyone, but this site contains a couple of unobtrusive Google ads that pay us a few cents per visit, but you won’t see those ads if you’re running AdBlock.  I use AdBlock myself, but there’s a few sites that I really want to support (such as ExpectingRain), so I disable AdBlock for those sites.  You can usually just click the stop sign icon and say “Disable” or “Don’t Run” on this page.  I’d be really nice if you could disable AdBlock when you visit this site, and feel free to visit any sponsor of interest to you.

Again, I’m sorry for having to bring this up, and I’m sorry this has been such a long post.  You folks have let me play Dylan’s music for you for nearly 10 years now, and I’d love to keep doing it for 10 more! YOU are the only reason this site exists.  If it weren’t for you, I would have had to close up shop years ago.  Thank you for that honor, my friends.

~Pete Freckelton (The Walrus, your DJ)

UPDATE:  Great News! We can now accept PayPal donations again! So, if you can’t commit to a monthly Patreon donation (and in this economy, that includes most of us), you can now make a one-time donation via PayPal by clicking this link!

AND, since we need to catch-up on some of these outstanding bills quickly, for a limited time, donations of $20 or more will get you the same “thank-you” gift that monthly Patreon sponsors receive. Please don’t feel obligated to donate, and certainly don’t donate the milk-money. DylanRadio is FREE, and will always be free, but that’s thanks to the folks who CAN donate.
